(April 20, 1915 - October 18, 2006), American nuclear physicist; received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in mathematical biophysics in 1939, then worked at the Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago until the war intervened; administrator at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) during in Manhattan Project period 1945-48, General Semantist.
